Architecting Solutions - My Supersonic Highway!

It all started not too long ago..4 yrs to be precise..when I stepped into my first "work". Yeah...being late to office, but apart from that I learnt what it takes to be successful..You gotta "think".

The first project I was assigned to, was quite challenging. Add to it, it was an emerging technology which was still in Beta 1. I managed to develop a solution in 2 days. Everyone was surprised, incl my boss. The then IT Director, Mr. Lim Kok Meng, came to me and asked me to explain what I had done. Then he classified it as a failure. This is what he said:

"If you think you are doing good, stop and think. You will do better"

I was confused. I dint work much for 2 days after that. I just wanted an answer..Then I asked him and he said:

"If you think you are doing bad, dont stop to think. You cant do worse"

The above can be taken in an optimistic and pessimistic way, but being me, I managed to think of a better way and managed to create one of the first methods of implementing it using .Net in the world. This made me happy. But I still dint understand what he meant. When I asked him he said:

"If you think you dont know, think and you will become better"

OK, I know it gets a bit philosophical, irritating and what not, but these words made an impact. The curious me started to think.

The last time I talked to him (I do bump into him quite often), and yeah, asked him, he just smiled. Said some things are better experienced than taught.

Anywayz, the big build up is for this. My concept of what it takes to succeed..I know a bit abt IT industry but I guess it can be applied anywhere.

People-Processes-Technology-Tools (P2T2) - Copyrighted :P

People are the core of anything u wanna do, if u dont have the right people, any project is going to fail. Its about the attitude of people as much as its the expertise of people. Strong emphasis of the right people to fit the job is vital, while ensuring continuity and enhancement through new ideas and a vibrant working environment.

Processes are core to the business and how we deal with a business problem. Solution Architecting is all about mapping the business processes and thus domain knowledge is equally important. Business models, design methologies are all processes. These are intuitively classified as "theory", the word itself capable of eliciting a yawn. Developers often mock them, but once these are implemented by someone, the same developers can do wonders with the same processes.

Technology is core to efficiently and effectively deliver the solution to the business problems. Quality is as much important and thus, good technology can serve the ideal purpose. Bad ones can ruin it. Best Practices are often made a mockery of, and is similar to design methodologies. Use it and gain from it, else lose it and get pain from it.

Tools are often underestimated, but are equally important for the effective use of technology. Imagine IT companies without KB search tools, Google or even Project Management tools. In the automated world of today, where our physical memory is seamlessly replaced by hard disks (ofcourse, it makes u absent minded and makes our brain die a slow death, but we are conditioned into this and all we can do is to think harder to make use of some grey cells atleast). These tools are very vital in ensuring concentration of resources in critical areas rather than trivial areas.

Hope I have given a exhaustive brief about what it takes, according to me. Keep thinkin and travel on the highway! What abt me? Im stuck in a traffic jam right now :P

English and Spell Check

How many of us know whats a spell check, and if so, use it, even though it is provided by default in most of the applications we use today. Here are a few gems from my masters discussion board...

"In this fast paced environment, no company would like to left behind, thus they should welcome employee who think out of the box. Company should welcome these people with open arms as usually creative people are problem solver that offers novelty solution."

"We should start trying to “think out of the box” approach in small steps, as any small changes could consider creativity."

"...we are encouraged to come out with the new idea and at the same time be ready for any new idea come from other colleagues. We need to avoid us become selfish, which only accept good idea from ourselves."

"I believe sceintist are leaders too. Take Thomas Edison's invention of light bulb, in this area he took leadership and lead to other scientist's future enhancement in the area of providing electrical ellumination that we benefitted in modern days. Even though they might now at their live time ever lead a group of people or a dynasty but their leadership in a particular field of research reaches far beyond their live and death."

"I conclude that it, one who possess the above aspects can be consider as a leader irrespective of whoever he may be."

"I Agree with this point, that not all scientist are leader, only they who have organization (formal or informal) with objective, and do leadership task (leading, directing, managing resource etc) can be considered as leader. Absolutely it's applicable for all expertise or role, not only scientist."

"My opinion and experience that most entrepreneurship will become a good leadership to make their company successful. They like it or not, but this is the fact that they have to lead their employee and market to achieve their own goals and vision. If they cannot do this, of course I can guarantee they will be failed soon or later."

"A good leader is mostly will not jump to become an entrepreneurship, they like to stay in their leadership style without making a lot of money and creates new products. Especially the charismatic leadership or even the military leadership, they are most humble or want to be a powerful people in the future instead of become a successful entrepreneurship."

"I dun belive in firm leadership and democatic way of rules will help in the long run."

"It's hard to divide the leadership styles as they will progress over the time. Who will know that the future shall find a new style again. Times and people characters will progress over the time."

Ok, thats enuf for a day. I cant take it any more :P I am not the guy who screams at bad englipiss, but I have a hearty laff, and thot shud share it with u guys too.

Plot Summary for Gajini (2005)

Surya's "Ghajini" is the most eagerly awaited movie ever since its audio with music by Harris Jayaraj became a chartbuster. The release has been postponed a couple of times and now it is finally slated for September end. It is an all-out action adventure directed by A. R. Murugadoss. The theme is offbeat. It is about a man who suffers from short-term memory loss after a head injury. He starts tattooing names of people and places on his body as he tries to unravel the mystery behind his wife's killers. According to Surya, who is paired with two glam girls Asin and Nayantara: "It is a technically superior, edge-of-the-seat thriller that is sure to be an entertainer. It is superbly packaged too."

Plot Summary for Memento (2000)

Leonard (Guy Pearce) is an insurance investigator whose memory has been damaged following a head injury he sustained after intervening on his wife's murder. His quality of life has been severely hampered after this event, and he can now only live a comprehendable life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera. The movie is told in forward flashes of events that are to come that compensate for his unreliable memory, during which he has liaisons with various complex characters. Leonard badly wants revenge for his wife's murder, but, as numerous characters explain, there may be little point if he won't remember it in order to provide closure for him. The movie veers between these future occurrences and a telephone conversation Leonard is having in his motel room in which he compares his current state to that of a client whose claim he once dealt with.

Podaanga!

A Special Day

Whats special is that today marks the 59th birthday of my amma. Shes been the woman whoz mostly been in the shadows in my life, always there but without her, it wud have been impossible. And frankly I havent done her justice for wht she has done. I talk a lot more abt my dad anyday, but that doesnt mean I love my mom any less. Juz a bit sad that I aint with her on her special day.

Today is a special day too. It has been ejjatly 55 weeks since I started blogging to reach a century of postings. Aint it a nice coincidence that I started off my first post on my appa's bday and reached 100 on my amma's. It started off as an online diary, but soon encapsulated as a place where my thots are embossed on and where I can sneak into others' minds. It has been a journey bittersweet, with lotsa friends n fun..And an occasional foray into self-realisation and introspection makes it all the more nice.

I have been having a tough time the last few weeks. With three things to handle simultaneously, I really have had to prioritise things. Pushed beyond the physical capabilities is when your mental strength is exposed. I wish I do have something up there! With no time to even break down, it was nice to take a day off today. Ofcourse Murphy's law struck with a major problem, but I was upto it and gave a kuttu on its head so hard that Murphy will think twice before comin bak to me :P But that only means the pressure adds up tomm. But it was all expected, so this is my chance..to become a Hero or Zero.. Ofcourse, I wud prefer the former.

Ofcourse, the Blogger servers goin down almost 4 hrs today dint help :P With a quick search, I realised this aint the first time... Was juz expected, with a huge number of ppl takin to bloggin these days! Anywayz, lemme get started...Every long journey begins with a small step.

What was I thinkin?

Got up to find the murky skies gentle soothe my shoulders and sing a lullaby to contuinue my sleep. Deserved or not, I wasnt happy about sleeping the entire evening yesterday, when I had some urgent work to do. Add to it the abuses I wud have made when I realised I was late. What the heck am I late for on a rainy sunday morning? Lets juz say I am "tied" down. Anywayz, I groped about for my towel n after a quick shower, I was off. I was always conscious about not "burning out" by running a hectic 21/7 schedule, with occasional chance time-off like yesterday. But my roomie juz reminded me about it when I was stepping out of the house. This kinda made me ponder abt it during the way to the train station. Should I manage my time better? How can I manage it better, with my lazy mind rebelling saying that "You useless piece of crap dont even use me, andr u thinkin of overburdening me, how sweet of u". So with my mind giving me the green signal, I realised I was a bit too late for my train. I rannnnnnn and juz managed to miss one, so I had to wait a long hard 6 mins before the next one. Trust me, it doesnt get worse here in Singapore than a whole lot of 6 mins doing nothing! So, I was trying to list down the things I had to do, and naturally, I dint know how time went by.

Finally the damned train arrived, and I merrily took a seat opposite to what I presumed was a nice looking babe. And as any honourable guy with a Ms. A/B/C/J in their minds wud do, I stared away from the babe, occasionally glancing towards the girl to check out if she was checking me out. And voila! I did catch her in the act quite a bit. She was really "checking me out!" Man, was I hot or not? Or was it the murky romantic setting that nature has given for her? Then I realised she was actually a good "looking" babe, ie..her eyes dint wander and it stayed..err...below my eye level. So I was doubly careful not to "react". Then after a few stations, I was getting curious as would a true saggi, in all his glory. What the heck was she lookin at for so long...I was getting a bit uncomfy..cmon, i aint tht look looking babe, look away from me for a sec...Then I decided to look at myself to see if this guy really deserved it...Shaved face (u cud call it paal vadiyum mugam) and yday being Saturday, I had to present myself to the scrutiny of a soul 3000 kms away..so trimmed silky hair(thanks to the profuse use of Head and Shoulders yday) and clean neat shirt (for once), then ...I realised a thatuvam.

When a gal forgets to button up any part of her dress, its called fashion...but Im a guy.

So with a horrendous realisation came the enlightenment I was waiting for. This really made me shy and averse to looking in the direction of the gal I was so intent on, a few moments ago. Thank God I had a bag with which I was able to rescue my compromising position and on the pretext of checking out the contents of my bag, I managed to "uncompromise" myself. I tried to be Mr. Cool and drift off to sleep, but I must admit I was aware of a pair of intent eyes on me all the time...You can very well guess the fate of the rest of the journey. So much for a murky sunday morning!

Sacrifice

Sacrifice is often the purest word u can get. Some might say Love, but its been misused and misinterpreted a lot. This is something right from a person's heart, something selfless done for the sole good of others, even though it might be detrimental to oneself. A lot of people have sacrificed for me, to make me into what I am today. I have felt it many a times, but what have I done till now? Cribbed about my only sacrifice to date to whichever friends asks me this kostin "Why did u come here?" What have I done? Indeed none.

Sacrifice is often silent, not talked about. Its juz the feeling in the recepient's heart that stands testimony to it. I am almost in tears after receiving one of the biggest sacrifices made for me. I dun wanna name the person nor mention what was done, but I do hope the person gets to read this, cos I wanna convey my heartfelt "Thanks!" cos Im struggling to tell it in person. It has had such a huge impact on my life, even though it has been a big detriment to the person, that I would vouch to do everything in my powers forever in my life for that person. I know sacrifices are not like tit for tat, but that might juz be my small way of showing my gratitude.

I have felt I never really had many really close friends in my life, but with people like these, why shud I even bother? Learnt a big lesson in life. Learnt the true meaning of love (pls dont misconstrue this one).

What women want?

I know Im going into unknown unsafe uncharted territories and I wud be probably juz as uninsightful after I finish this post. But I was kinda puzzled that I have never publicly commented abt gals n women in this blog, even though I have known quite a few..and quite a few guys think "something something" of me. So here it goes.

Women dont know wht they want. If they know what they want, they dont know how much they want. If they know how much they want, they dont know how to get it. And if they do know everything, they wont tell. But they want it from others, just the way they want it.

I have this hypothesis that "An object of a given complexity will never be able to fully comprehend an object of the same or higher complexity". This when applied to our brain shud tell us tht we can never hope to fully comprehend our brain. However, a certain genre of human kind dont seem to accept this.

Given the relative frequency of definitive answers to "edhavadhu", "something", "whatever", it is an even more Herculean task to comprehend. Also, all girls are very well versed in the cryptic language. Its quite stunning how they expect all guys to have ESP powers and decipher their codes instantaneously. Else, they feel that the guys are not understanding them and they have been misled, manipulated, cheated n so on.

That leads to a very interesting question. Why are guys always precise, definitive and girls are often vague and un-fathomable. Guys see 16 colors, girls see 256. Guys see evidence, girls see circumstances. Guys are procedural, but girls are artistic. You cant define art can u? ;) And thanks to a very enlightening 30 mins of discovery yday, Guys are also built to be very precise when it comes to sex, namely start-fill-empty-done, while girls are very vague about what they want in that as well. On a more down-to-everyday scale, why do women like cooking, arts and housekeeping n other stuff, while men are more bent on gaming, hunting, sports where precision is of high importance.

Im not stereotyping the genders in any way nor am I saying that one thing is better than the other, but Im juz wondering if there is a hidden truth behind the way things are. Are we meant to be that way? If so, whats the logic? Even the Chaos theory supports this. There must be an order in the otherwise insane world of guys n gals.

So whats the answer to the question? And the answer is...there is no precise answer. So thats why men cant find it out. Its vague and the artistic minds of women tend to articulate the answer in such a magnitude that they will never be able to decipher, in essence making it even more vague. So its like the universe. You try to quantify it and you realise that you will never reach the end of it. You try to qualify it in vague terms like God and Mind, and none will get to the bottom of it.

Thalai !!!

When u talk abt whoz the "thalai", nammavar comes to the fore for more than one reason. Lets talk a bit abt how we became pals. Puls has been with me from a quite young age (from 1991 to be precise). Being hyper to take a look around 108 puls on Vinayaka Chaturthi, I went around in my rented cycle. Was really fun and I went far and wide. Stopped near "Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam" and took in some usual "Deepa Aaradhanai". Nothin new except that when the poojari came to give me the viboodhi, he also gave me a small stothra book and asked me to recite it every Chaturthi (its a phase of moon, comes every fortnight). I have no idea abt why he said it, but me fell in love on first sight with the elephant-faced guy! So I decided to give it a shot n went n told my parents. Since then, ive been doin it, although with a glitch of forgotten memory here n there. Although since the book has got bigger, and puls has kept up to date with technology and cloned himself in my showcase, the small puls idol that I first had, still remains with me. This strict rigour really made me into the person I am today. I had some stupid sentis. From my young age, I resolved not to kill anything (incl blood sapping mosquitoes) on Chaturthi. During my teenage, this evolved into the policy of "no lies" and "no sightings" on Chaturthi. Poor da gals ;) But whtever crappy policy I had, it really meant one thing. Giving me the strength to resist temptations. I might hav said this before, but I believe temptations will always be there. Its a personal decision whether u wanna give into it or not, and these decisions are what shapes u in ur life. Whether it made me take the right decisions or not, it made me a bit more resistant and prudent to the temptations around me. So all in all, today is the bday of my best friend for life and i juz wanna say "Thanks for being with me through thick n thin". Love ya puls!

Use Case

Scenario: I got tagged.
Frequency: 5-6 times.
Pre-condition: New Tag Today.
Flow of Events: Now I really thot abt attempting one.
Post-condition: I wanna write abt tagging.
Exceptions:
1. My lazy brain said aaaaah
2. My vision of the remaining 5 ppl screaming at me for not tagging theirs and being partial, cos Im not.

Sorry, a bit overworked by my prof today!

Anywayz, comin to the point, the whole idea of tagging and forwarding seem to be the brainchild of the same person. There is a lot in common, now that I really think about it.

1. Both come from friends.
2. Both are electronic leveraging on popular media.
3. Both start off small and grow really big (fwds from 1 joke a mail to abt 20-25, tags from 3 fav things to 7 fav things)
4. Both want the users to propagate this idea, thus creating a distribution channel across inbox/blogs
5. Both have an inherent compelling factor (too good to resist).
6. Both displays the author's creativity and makes ppl smile.
7. Both ask you to carry it on, but any such activity sadly triggers an allergic response to my brain, which prohibits straining itself for more than 0.2 sec.

Eureka!

A Plan, A Talk, A presentation, A day is all I am gonna talk abt.

As always I was lazing around in the weekends not doing what I am supposed to do, but brooding over things that are not too important at present. A master plan was made to be executed and everything seemed fresh and possible. This was last monday. The whole of last week was a nightmare. Went to office, went to class, went to college, but no where did I do anything. The last week was probably the most wasted week of my life so far. And I thot that was bad! A loose connection in my speakers allowed me to conveniently miss talkin to u know who for 3 days last week n feelin bad abt it the next day.

On saturday, I gotta hear the VP of Tata Sons, Mr. Satish Pradhan. But tht guy was held up, so a certain Chatterjee started to fill in with some info on TCS. Man, what a comic relief it was! And we all had a nice long laugh when he said sirrrrrr, please come and talk to Satish immediately as he came in. Doesnt reflect too good on tht guy, worse still cos hes the HR chief of Asia Pac for TCS. the VP himself wasnt too bad, and he certainly knew how to keep his audience interest. The Tata football ad tht he played made me scroll down memory lane. I miss india! At times, it really made me feel proud being an Indian. Though he was painting a picture too rosy, the ppl here love pink n rose color, so wht the heck ;) Then I gotta talk to him over coffee, and this is how it went...

RA: Sir,ur talk is the least informative talk I have ever seen...
S: $#@%$#^ (u shud have seen the look on his face - priceless)
RA: ...and the most enlightening talk I had been...
S: @#$@#$..... :D:D:D

Love to play with words and ppl, dont I?

So I gave up on last week and decided to start fresh this week. Everything was set for me to work when I went in today. A lot of problems already piled up on my desk was a nice greeting and I eagerly switched on my comp. Then I proceeded to gently caress it and then scorn at it, shout at it, bang it till I had a coupla curious eyes pop into my cabin (which wont be with urs truly for much longer...damn the privatisation).

Now that I had lost the service of my faithful lover, I decided to go to my chinna veedu. Being brand new (we only started courting last month), shes quite smooth and nice to me, apart from being a pain in the back sometimes. Overall, I love her style, her texture, and u know I always like a kozhuk mozhuk gal rite! So there she was at my service. With a "Ding Dong Dell, Are you doin Well?", I started my quest for glory.

I made a wise decision to start on my presentation (due to be presented in the class today). I thot abt bunking, but wht the heck if I get paid 8 hrs for doing juz tht? ;) So, I did..and did..and did..in the end it turned out pretty well without the usual issues. But I was too engrossed in that, that I forgot to take my lunch. When I realised, I decided to grab it on the way to my class, n eat it during the break. Break that came and went in a flurry of enquiries from my teammates. Finally, the presentation I was starving for. Being the only team out of the 3 today to elicit a round of applause, it was all worth it. Ofcourse, I did get my fair share of blastings from everyone for not having my lunch, which I am finally having now at 12am ;)

But thats the way I am.

Lunchtime Dilemma

There is always a Dilemma for me walking into China Square everyday for lunch. On the first floor (Level 2 as they call it here), we have a crowded Punjabi stall, serving up hot rotis and chappathis and naans and other north indian stuff. Thanks to them I realised roti and chappathi are different! And also, there is a hot Punjabi girl who serves the dishes and all the guys will proclaim in unison that the way she bends down to serve them exposes her...humbleness, thus making it no wonder that they draw a lot of crowd. Dont know how many know that she has a kid! "Neenga endha skool padikkareenga?" range.

On the other hand, on Level B1 (yeah, thts how these guys call a basement), we have a stall whose name I try to remember everyday and every day i forget. Shudhmukh Dakshin whatever crap. The average age of the "servers" there is 50+ and they serve all of sambar and thachi mammum. And they charge pretty high!

My choice? I love thachi mammum.

Miss the kenjals, konjals and threats and offers to "ootify" by my mom just to get a couple of mouthfuls of the same thachi mammum :(

Blogger Mates

Continuing my quest for recognising my pals in the e-world, lemme give an intro to the newest additions to my daily blog roll.

But first a big thrashing to the old ones in my blog who havent updated their blogs for quite a while, or take the convenient attrocious route of copy pasting whatever they find on the inet.

Makki - Basket
Ranga - Depression
StarGazer - Disappointment
Ms. V - Vacation
Bala - Thinking mode..
Swetha - Writing on paper
V - Flown bird
Girish - Stuck with Incorrigibly Irritating Melancholy Ambitions

If you guys dont put something up soon, you might have to be demoted in my list..
And kudos to the most frequent ones...

Sharana - Let the flow continue
Ms. A - Let the honey trickle.
Smyta - Let the cute pics flash.
Princess - Let the prize continue to surprise!
Paparazzi - Let the search continue..
Nandini - Let the pages scroll..
Nathan - Let the history be re-written
Preethi - Let the camera roll..

And now, to intro our new comers...

Susmita Dutta - Another poetess I admire for her caliber and the gentle caressing her words get. Flyin high in da US yet has time to say hi to the blogworld..

Priya - Standing tall in the effortless words she structures, you can find everything from drooling to brooding to taking u down memory lane..

Deepti - Everyday tidbits to amazing depth of book reviews (well, i shudnt comment on tht), but now off to greener cooler pastures of wipro, blore (makki, u listening?)

Vinesh - Hilarious accounts of college and deep insightful thots, sometimes too deep for my poor soul..Definitely a thumbs up!

Oka - Your stomach would be irreprisible by the account he gives abt being sleepless in some tiny place in the west. Bouts of laughter guaranteed.

Siddharth - Introducing popeye the sailor man...though I wud say hes here cos of being in the same "wavelength"

Lavanya - What do u think? Find out. Deft touches of the third eye leave you confused, if not anything else.

Srini - Being in College Station equates to being jobless I guess, cos this guy has more to offer than all your knowledge of vedas combined.

Divya - Occasional flash of brilliance, followed by the long mourn of sojourn.

And now for the shocker: I was generally surfing and I was shocked to find this. Some guys are trying to make big money out of this blogging business!
